It’s been 90 years since we first opened our doors to students. We’ve since earned our reputation as one of Britain’s finest teaching universities, providing a high-quality education and producing life-changing research.

We’re 'the friendly university’ that puts students at the heart of everything we do. And we’re among the UK's top 10 universities for graduate employability.

A history set in stone

The University of Hull was founded in 1927 – originally as University College Hull. The foundation stone was laid the following year by the Duke of York (later King George VI, of The King's Speech fame) and we opened for business with 39 students and 14 ‘one-man’ departments. We’ve come a long way since then, to put it mildly. The University now has more than 16,000 students and around 2,500 employees, including more than 1000 academic staff. Our BSc Chemical Engineering programme is ranked at number 20 in the UK in the Times & Sunday Times newspapers.

Building for the future

We’re committed to providing our students with top-class facilities and an ideal environment in which to live and learn. We’re undergoing a £200-million project to dramatically improve our buildings and facilities. This includes a £28-million health campus, new luxury student accommodation and the £9.5-million renovation of Middleton Hall into a high-quality performance venue and cinema space.
